Week 9, 2017 July 15th – July 22nd

Another week has gone by here at Jim and Julie’s Wabaskang Camp. I know I am almost two weeks behind on my updates so here is what we know about week nine of our season. We saw many of our guests struggle with the walleye fishing this week, the walleyes are still eating but not where and when our guests were fishing for them. Most of the eater sized walleyes are without a doubt tucked tight into the weeds right now and are enjoying easy pickings with the huge schools of baitfish hiding in the weeds. The water is cooler near the bottom next to the base of the good green weeds and although the fish are there they can be very difficult to pull from their weedy lairs. A jig and minnow did catch a ton of weeds and a few walleyes as well. Most of our guests reported feeling a very slight resistance to their line and when they set the hook about half the time it was a fish and not a weed. Craig Mericle’s best walleye this week was a nice 24” fish he thought was great but his fish was matched by Kiliegh Howard and Luke Howard who are both less than 1/4th Craig’s age, seems all those years of fishing really hasn’t paid off Craig. Jon Mericle, Craig’s son also caught a 24” walleye so the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree—–that’s a shame! Jennifer Mericle was the big winner this week when she caught and released a chunky 26 1/4” walleye, she was the proud winner of the free hat and has bragging rights until next season. Bass fishing was exciting for our guests this week and we saw plenty of nice fish being caught. Some of our guests were using crank baits and some were using a jig and minnow but either way the action was fast and furious. Jacob Mericle caught 15” bass right from the dock and was so excited to be in first place for the week until old and grumpy Grandpa Craig Mericle came along and crushed his dreams with a chunky 18” bass, way to be a dream crusher Craig. hope you really enjoy your free hat. Northern fishing slowed this week as well but many of our guests were not actually targeting the toothy critters anyway. Cody Howard came marching into the lodge to report he had caught a 24 1/4” “slimmer”, he was really excited, Jon Mericle landed a chunky 27” northern that for him is pretty good, we had a two-way tie for first place this week with Luke Howard and Scott Howard both releasing 31” northern, great job fellas. Next week we have a camp full of “Iowa” anglers so no doubt there will be plenty to talk about. Bed time for me, so for now this is Jim from Wabaskang.
