Week 2, 2022 May 28th – June 4th

Hello again from Jim and Julie’s Wabaskang Camp. We had another very good week of fishing here during week two of our season. The walleye bite has been consistently shallow and many of our guests’ used jigs and plastics to lure the fish into biting. The fish are so shallow that you can virtually cast into the flooded tree line and catch fish. Another great technique was a simple split shot and minnow combination just slowly pulled across the bottom. Weeds were good holding spots but rock rubble seemed even better this week.

Logan Kleinschmidt released a chunky 25″ walleye, Mike Pease released his 25″ walleye as well, newcomer Mary Erickson caught a 25″ walleye while her guide Marty Robbins caught a hefty 26 1/2″ walleye. Craig Kleinschmidt released his 26″ brute. Conrad Stromberg released a nice 27 1/2″ walleye only to see his idle Rick Carlson catch and release a 27 3/4″ walleye, always just a little bit bigger than Conrad’s fish. The biggest walleye of the week was brought to the boat by Jim Erickson, he managed to land a 28″ trophy.

Northern fishing was very good for our guests who actually fished for northern. Most of the big brutes were caught on spoons and perch-colored spinners of various sizes. Some of the biggest northern this week were caught on light tackle by our walleye fishermen.  Superstar Rick Carlson released a 30″, 32”, and a 37 1/2″ northern during the week.  Conrad Stromberg released a 32″, and a 38″ northern that matched the biggest northern of the week.  Camp legend Mike Pease always catches plenty of big fish and he released a 37 1/3″ and a 38″ brute to match Conrad for the biggest northern of the week.

Our bass fishing was fast and furious with plenty of huge bass being caught and released. Most of the fish were caught with twister tails and medium sized crank baits. Mary Erickson released her biggest a chunky 17 3/4″ bass. Once again Mike Pease ruled the roost by catching and releasing a pair of 18 3/4″ brutes, great job Mike.

Crappie and perch fishing has been steady with huge crappies coming from most areas south of our camp. The perch are scattered but a bobber and small piece of worm did produce some nice sized perch. The crappies seemed to prefer a minnow and tiny jig and were mainly suspended in 10′ of water close to rock piles. The biggest crappie of the week was caught by Conrad Stromberg, he managed to land a giant 14 3/4″ fish, easily the biggest of the week.

We want to remind our future guests to get your fishing license before you arrive as we are not doing them here at camp right now. Remember no poultry products or live bait of any kind is allowed into Canada right now, you can pick up everything you need after you cross into Canada. The closure of highway 105 remains in effect and the detour towards Quibel is open. Our boat launch and dock area have several areas of high water around it so knee boots are a plus if you have them.  Remember the Whiskey Jack restaurant is open five days a week and can cook you a great meal if you desire, Also Manotak Lodge is taking dinner reservations as well. Dutchies General Store and Rainbow Point Store have plenty of items you may need or desire so stop in and take a look.

That’s all for now,

Jim from Wabaskang
