Here we are at the end of another season at Jim and Julie’s Wabaskang Camp. Week 18 and 19 brought us some beautiful days and some crappy days. The water level is back to where it usually is this time of year. Our guests enjoyed good walleye fishing with fish being caught in deep water and fish being caught in shallow water close to weeds and rocks. A simple jig and minnow worked great for our guests that were fishing the deeper water and a spinner rig and minnow was the ticket for our guests trolling shallow water. Joe Reese made a second trip to camp this season and he landed a nice 21″ walleye Gene and Darlene made multiple trips to camp this season as well and they both landed 21″ walleyes which they proudly caught on the spinner rigs Gene makes himself. Terry Pepin was new to camp but he caught on quickly and his biggest walleye was a chunky 23″ fish. Our big champion walleye fisherman this week was Brian Luecke, this was his second trip to camp this season and he made the most of it. He caught and released a beautiful 28 1/2″ walleye within sight of camp, great job Brian. Our northern fishing is still as good as ever. Some guests trolled small crank baits and some guests were casting deep weed beds with large spoons and spinners and were pulling in monster pike. Joe Reese started things off when he landed and released a chunky 28 1/2″ northern. Dave Pepin was enjoying his first trip to camp and his skills in northern fishing were obvious right from the start. He landed a 37″ and a 37 3/4″ northern just a few casts apart, beginners luck? I don’t think so. Brian Luecke caught and released a beautiful 38 1/2″ northern which he was really proud of. The biggest northern of the week was caught and released by Darlene Katzung, she used one of her husband Gene’s famous spinners to catch a monster 39″ northern, she was really excited to tell me about it when they returned to the dock. Not very many bass caught this week but Gene Katzung did land a chunky 16″ bass, his spinners strike again. Julie and I are starting the hard work of closing camp down for the season. We will be busy cleaning and draining and fixing things for the next few weeks for sure. We are excited to hear the vaccination requirements are scheduled to be lifted October 1st and hope that it does happen and it is a permanent decision. Many of our guests that we haven’t seen for three seasons may finally be able to call and reserve a cabin for next season. That’s all for now, this is Jim from Wabaskang.
