Here we go again, another Tuesday and another weekly update. Week 13 saw some good action on trophy fish and an uptrend on numbers of smaller “eater sized” walleye being caught. Our guests are catching walleyes in shallow water on top of rock piles if the wind is creating a decent chop on the water, otherwise weed lines and deep-water humps are producing some decent fish. Live bait rigs were used by most of our guests, both minnows or crawlers worked well. A few guests did well with Jigging Raps and crank baits as well. Wabaskang Lake faced the “triple headed Heuer Monster” this week, brothers Nick and Brandon along with their father Jon Heuer caught and released a 26″, a 25 1/2”, and a 25 1/2″ respectively, not huge but not too shabby. Josh Hood managed to stumble into and release a 26″ beauty, Bob Bruns always catches some trophy fish even though the odds are stacked against him with son Tim operating the boat, Bob released a giant 27 1/2″ walleye on his first day out. Tim Wuethrich along with newlyweds Kelsey and Rhett Lammers all released 28″ walleyes this week but the three are all on the outside looking in because “camp virus” Marty Neihouser landed and released a monster 30″ walleye, Marty shows a flash of brilliance every once in a while, but lately those “flashes” have been years apart.
Northern fishing made up for the less-than-ideal walleye fishing again this week. We had plenty of trophies released this week, many were caught on huge musky baits while fishing around deep water humps and some were caught while using a slip bobber and minnow combination near rock piles and weed lines. A few of our guests hoisted in the toothy critters using a jig and minnow in deep water while fishing for walleyes. Once again Brandon Heuer’s name comes up, he released a 36″ a 37 1/2″ and a 38 1/2″ northern this week, he caught his trophies on the reliable Sandcat bait. Marty Neihouser released a 38 1/2″ beauty, Venita Bruns overcame her son Tim’s curse and released a chunky 36″ brute. Friends Sue Cabelinski and Karen Orr released 36″ and 35 1/2″ northerns respectively. Our biggest northern of the week was caught and released by the relentless Tim Wuethrich, his 40″ pike easily outclassed the competition this week.
Bass fishing kept many of our seasoned anglers busy this week. Early morning and late evening top-water baits worked well along with sinking crank baits. Best spots were weeds number one and rock piles number two. One name says it all this week, Tim Wuethrich released a 19″ and a 19 1/4″ bass to crush the competition in camp.
Our crappie fishing picked up this week with some guests catching their limits. A jumble jig and worm worked when you could find the roaming school usually in about 14′ of water. Camp legend Mike Pease was back in camp and he did well in all categories this week but especially shined while crappie fishing, he guided his group to great catches and even though his best was 14″ he was gracious enough to let his buddy Josh Hood catch a 14 3/4″ crappie just to see the smile on Josh’s face, that’s the kind of guy Mike is.
We had one big Musky released this week, our son-in-law Brandon Heuer released his 36 1/4″ trophy after one quick picture, biggest of the season so far fella.
Next week we have a camp full of seasoned anglers so the report should be very interesting for sure. Remember to have clean and dry live wells and boats in general with the plugs pulled when you cross into Canada to help prevent the introduction of invasive species into Ontario waters. That’s all for now this is Jim from Wabaskang.
