Here we are again, talking about decent fishing and great weather. The week of 7/4-7/10 was busy here with a full camp. We are seeing some warmer weather now and finally starting to see expansive weeds growth in the lake. Plenty of talk about the wildfires in Northwestern Ontario but currently nothing of concern in our area, most fires are east of us and moving away. There is currently a ban on any open fires, so propane stoves or cookers are being used for shore lunches and absolutely no campfires allowed at this time.
The walleye fishing was decent again this week with some guests catching their personal best this week. Soft bottom humps and shallow rock piles produced big fish especially early in the morning. A jig and minnow worked well but 3” soft plastics caught a fair share of fish as well. The Chad Heim family spent a week with us and they had a great Saturday, Chad’s mom Char caught a beautiful 27” walleye, Chad’s son Logan caught a giant 28 1/4” walleye that he was so proud of only to see dad Chad pull in a monster 30 1/4” walleye, all three fish were personal bests for them here at Wabaskang. Deb Waterman also caught a 27 1/2” walleye the same day but too bad so sad not a hat winner.
Bass fishing was really good just fishing off our docks. Twister tails and crank baits were the ticket. Also, many guests caught bass working the rocky shorelines and deep weed lines close to camp. Dick Paskon was excited to report his 17” bass to me and he left a day early with his winning hat only to get crushed on Friday by Teagan George, he caught a monster 19” brute, he won a hat as well!
Northern fishing was a bit slow for trophy fish but super good for the 24” to 26” fish. A spinner rig and minnow worked well but a simple spoon or crank bait also tire up the toothy critters. The biggest northern of the week was caught by one of our youngest guest this week, Cait Busch is wearing her winning hat after reporting to me she caught a 30” pike. No crappies to report on and no trout this week as well.
A few days of super-hot weather is headed our way next week so we’re hoping for some significant rain soon, the water level on the lake is decent now but will start to go down fast without some rain soon. Remember I need to see your fishing license when you arrive in camp and keep a copy on hand in case the MNR wants to see it and compare it to what you have in the freezers in the fish cleaning house, you can get them at Clark’s Bait and Tackle in Dryden or Vermillion Bay or just up the road at Dutchies General Store. All three places also sell souvenirs and tackle along with food items and Dutchies carries a great selection of adult beverages. When you’re here at camp try to make time for a meal or two at The Whiskey Jack Restaurant just a stones throw north of our driveway, Laura and Graham have the best barbecue anywhere around and would love to serve you and your family.
