Greetings from Jim and Julie’s Wabaskang Camp. Week 10 of the season is in the books so let’s find out how the week went. We experienced some crazy hot weather for a few days this week, highs in the upper nineties for a few days really put a damper on the fishing. We are still very dry here and of course no open fires are allowed across the district. Lake levels are slowly falling but still no issues being reported by our guests.
Walleye fishing remains the main focus of our guests, eater sized fish in the 15” to 17” range are mostly still hiding in the weeds and can be caught using a jig and minnow or crawler combination along with medium sized tube baits. The big walleyes are caught in the weed’s mornings and evenings but during midday they are suspended down about 20’ over 30’ of water. Our guests caught some trophies using crank baits and soft plastics. A jig and minnow or crawler also caught trophy sized walleyes but mainly during low-light periods of the day. Rylee Cutsforth caught a 23” walleye, Kurt Behnke was proud of his 24” beauty, Dalton Van Houtan landed a 25” beauty, Larry Dorenkamp fished by himself for two weeks probably because no one can put up with him, but he did manage to catch a 27 1/2” walleye. The week belonged to Kevin Harvey though, he caught his personal best this week, he landed a chunky 28” walleye and a beautiful 28 1/2” trophy the same day, he has bragging rights over his group until next season.
Northern fishing continues to be fast and furious. Our guests used a wide variety of baits to catch the toothy critters with spoons, crank baits, twister tails, and a simple jig and minnow combination. Weedy bays and rocky shorelines were top producing areas. Witten Behnke made his first trip to camp, his young age didn’t hold him back, he caught a nice 36″ northern. Bentley Behnke has always been the guy to beat when he is in camp and his 35” fish was close to being a winner but close wins him nothing 😂 Bill and Sue Mincks were back in camp and this trip saw Sue winning the hat, she caught a 36 1/2″ and a chunky 37″ northern to crush her husband Bill who could only manage to catch a 36″ pike, another winning week for Sue.
Bass fishing was good this week with plenty of trophy bass being caught. Rock piles and weed lines close to deep water were the best places to fish and mornings and evenings were the best times to fish for them. Crank baits worked well but tube baits really were the hot bait this week, white, yellow, or brown were the top colors. Dan Edeker, Roger Lanie, and Dylan Jacob’s all reported catching 18″ bass, Bentley Behnke caught a chunky 18 1/2″
Bass that had his hopes up as a hat winner, but his dream was crushed by Dalton Van Houtan, his 19″ Trophy was tops in camp for the week.
We had a 40″ musky caught by Rylee Cutsforth this week, he was really surprised as was his fishing partner Madison, they managed to land the beast and get a great picture.
Please keep in mind our guests must release all walleyes 18″ and over and every northern 27 1/2″ and over, the fishing is good now, but all the camps are looking to make the future of fishing here in our area even better.
Please bring us a copy of your fishing license when you get here so we can have it if the MNR stops by and needs to know who has what type of license.
