Greetings from Jim and Julie’s Wabaskang Camp. The eleventh week of the season is in the books with plenty of trophy fish being caught and released. We continue to have smoky days here at camp, but no fires are close or threatening the area. Some rain in the forecast might help the extremely dry conditions that the entire area is experiencing right now. So far we are not allowing any campfires because of the dry conditions. We want to remind all our guests bringing boats to Canada from the U.S. to clean their boats and live wells before entering the province, the border officials are very concerned about the invasion of aquatic invasive species entering Ontario waters.
The walleye fishing was decent this week with some very good days and some very slow days. Most fish are being caught on worms or minnows right now but plastics are also productive. Weed lines and rock piles are holding the most fish right now. Micah Peterson released his chunky 24″ walleye, Sandi Paulson, Anita Bray, and Myles Reidy all released 25 1/2″ walleyes this week. Kendal Oliver caught the biggest walleye of the week, he managed to land a 27 1/2″ trophy, his personal best.
Bass fishing has slowed down some from earlier in the season, most fish are being caught on crank baits or twister tails along the shoreline. Any bait that resembled a crayfish worked well. Plenty of small bass were fried up for supper this week but the biggest bass of the week and a hat winner was caught and released by Brian Reidy; his 17″ beauty is back in the lake swimming around with a sore mouth.
Northern fishing really picked up later in the week with many toothy critters being caught on giant musky baits. Deep cabbage weeds were great places to cast for the giant assassins. Andrew Halla started things off when he released his 33″ beauty, Brian Reidy caught and released a chunky 37” trophy pike, Noah Timm released his personal best pike this week, a beautiful 38″ trophy. Todd Peterson tries so hard to out-fish his brother Chad but the trophy 37 1/2″ northern he released was just a bit too short to match brother Chad’s trophy 38″ monster pike, Chad released his “hat winner” after a quick picture👍.
Only one crappie reported to be board worthy this week, Mike Lepak landed a chunky 12″ crappie which was good enough to be a hat winner.
One musky was caught this week, Noah Times released his beautiful 30″ fish after a quick picture, great catch Noah!
Remember to try and make us a copy of your license before arriving at camp or we can copy it when you get here. Check in time is after 1:00pm on Saturday so if your running early stop in at the Whiskey Jack Restaurant and let Laura and Graham fix you a sumptuous meal and give us time to have the cabins all ready for you when you arrive, they also can cook you a great meal Wednesday through Sunday if you’re tired of eating fish😀. Blueberries are ready to pick so plan an afternoon of berry picking if you wish.
That’s all for now, this is Jim from Wabaskang.
