2017 Week 2 May 27th- June 2nd
Hello friends and fans of Wabaskang Camp. I am late again on updating everyone about the fishing here at camp so my apologies to everyone. Week number two of our season was loaded with big fish and lots of memories. We had some very nice trout caught by a select few in camp that know the secret to catching the phantoms of the deep. The best bait was a blue and silver spoon trolled down to about twenty-five or thirty feet over a depth of about fifty feet. Corey Katzung was the exception this week when I said most trout were caught by a select few who know the secret because he doesn’t have a clue when it comes to catching trout but his 19” trout was a start for the week. Gary Randolph caught a 26” brute which looked like it might be the biggest of the week but camp legend Conrad Stromberg crushed Gary’s fish when he brought a 35” brute back to camp. All of our big trout were caught in Aerobus Bay. Crappie fishing has continued to improve each year and week two saw some real “slabs” come into camp. No real secret to catching this fine table fare once you find them. Our guests were using small jigs tipped with a tiny minnow or bit of worm, the jig could be suspended from a bobber as well. Rick Pease always makes the camp news and his 131/2” crappie was nice but Blake “Sleepy” Johnson also knows a little about crappie fishing and he landed a 14” fish. Doug Karcz was the man to beat this week and his 141/8” fish was the best in camp for the week. Almost anyone who fished down in Keynote Lake came back to camp with a few crappies and many of our guests were able to take their limit home. Bass fishing was exciting for our bass fishermen this week, many fish over 18” were caught and released by our guests. The most productive bait seemed to be a tube jig worked along the reedy shores that are numerous here on Wabaskang Lake. Blake and Kevin Johnson come from Missouri and they tell me the best bass fishermen always come from Missouri and after they told me about one hundred fish days I guess I believe them. Blake’s biggest bass was a chunky 18 3/4” brute but his dreams of a catch and release pin and free hat were crushed when his father Kevin landed and released a monster 19 3/4” fish. Kenny Pierce caught some big bass as well but his best was a measly 19” fish, not bad but not quite good enough, better luck next time Kenny. Our northern fishing seemed to be spotty with very few big brutes being caught. Our guests were catching a few nice fish on live bait but nothing that was mentionable. David Koenig had bragging rights in his group when he landed and released a 38 1/2” fish but his looked like a minnow when compared to Sam Kinzy’s 41” monster. Sam caught and released his fish in the narrows near the entrance to the big lake using a small Mepp’s spinner, he made his dad Brian proud and put a huge smile on grandpa Bob’s face, brother Matt will have to try harder next season. Walleye fishing was exceptional again this week with many limits of eaters being tossed into the frying pan each day. Our best bite was in water less than ten feet deep using a jig or spinner rig. Bill Kleinschmidt and his son Craig each released walleyes over 23”, Bob Kinzy released a chunky 24” fish, Mike Pease is one of those fellas that can catch fish anytime and anywhere and his 24” fish was leading everyone in camp until Rick Carlson blew away the competition when he released a beautiful 28 5/8” walleye to fight another day, great job Rick and we really enjoyed the fish tacos you prepared for us. Next week promises more great fishing and I know there is a certain young lady from Shockapee MN that is
eagerly waiting to see here name here in week three’s camp update, for now this is Jim from Wabaskang.
