Week 3 of 2017 June 3rd – June 9th

2017 Week 3 June 3rd- June 9th
Another late update for all our friends eagerly awaiting all the week three camp news. The season is just flying along and our guests are enjoying exceptional fishing almost anywhere on the lake. The bass fishing was as good as it gets with the big females all in shallow and easy to catch. The best bait was a tube jig or small crank bait fished in three feet of water or less. Samantha Phippen has caught on to Wabaskang Lake fishing after years of instruction from Grandpa Ron, she released a beautiful 19” bass that made her brother Jack a little bit envious. Bonnie McCord is a quick learner and after some critical instructions from Kevin Johnson she landed and released a chunky 191/4” bass that on Wednesday was the biggest in camp, as usual she quickly had husband Doug pack up the camper and scurry out of here with her free hat, she has an entire closet full of illegitimately earned hats at home in Missouri. We didn’t want to tell her but her bass was crushed by Blake Johnson and Steve Sauer who both released 191/2” bass later in the week. We are on to your scheme and will be ready next season Bonnie! Northern fishing wasn’t what we wished it would be yet but some decent fish were released. Jeff Gaerke landed a chunky 37” fish while fishing shallow water in Keynote Lake, Doug McCord actually earned a legitimate free hat with his 381/2” monster which was the biggest in camp on week three, he caught his fish while fishing with light tackle for walleyes and crappies, you can wear your hat with pride Doug. Our crappie fishing was very good again this week with plenty of “slabs” being caught. The best bait was a tiny jig tipped with a minnow or piece of worm, shallow water was key with the depth of ten feet being the best. Keynote Lake was easily the top spot to be with very few crappies being caught anywhere else. Clinton Beavers landed a 13” crappie but Jeff Gaerke brought in a 14” beauty that was tops for the week and earned him a hat. Our walleye fishing has been exceptional all season and week three was no exception. Our guests were simply trolling or bobber fishing the shallow water along weed lines and rocky points, live bait was best but tube jigs and crank baits also produced good fish. Scott Mead took advantage of Dan Crotty’s vast reserve of fishing knowledge when Dan took him to a little spot across the lake and put him on a chunky 27” walleye, minnow or crawler I’m not sure but live bait was the ticket. Kay Willoughby landed a beautiful 281/4” walleye that she decided to take home and hang on the wall, great job Kay, I think husband Jim was proud as well. Mitch Weinberg did manage to release a 26” walleye but who cares? Pete Sauer always has a tough time with his credibility here at camp and this year was no exception. He claims he landed a walleye well over 30” inches but as he was holding it for a quick picture it mysteriously leaped from his tiny arms and splashed back into the lake. Sounds suspicious to me and the picture we saw of your “flying” fish looked more like a fish in the 25” range, too bad so sad. The real and honest super star in camp this week was Samantha Phippen, she landed and released a 29 3/4” trophy to earn a free hat and bragging rights in her family which is not easy to do, she was using her dad Scott’s pole at the time while he was tying a new jig on her rod, better luck next time Scott. We have another exciting week ahead with plenty of camp veterans so week four of our season promises to be full of big fish stories and probably a few surprises. I will do my best to keep on top of our updates from here on out, for now this is Jim from Wabaskang.
