Greetings from Jim and Julie’s Wabaskang Camp. Yes, I am a few weeks behind on my updates so here we go. Week number six of the season was filled with good fishing days and poor fishing days. The bass fishing has picked up from the previous week and we saw many fish between 17” and 19”. The techniques used varied from a simple bobber and worm set-up to casting tube jigs and crank baits. We saw many of the big brutes being caught in the mornings and evenings along rocky points and creek entrances. Brent Minett sold his boat this season but did manage to catch and release a chunky 18” fish. Dan Howard spent two weeks as our guest this season and his 18” bass was one of the biggest he has caught here at camp. Ryan Inselman landed and released a chunky 18” bass using a fly rod. Zayden Inselman followed in his father Ryan’s footsteps by also landing and releasing a beautiful 18” bass. Keith ‘KC” Hendrix released his biggest bass ever, a fat 18” fish. Dave Wendlandt usually has his name on the leader board and his 18-1/2” bass briefly put him in first place but Hayden Lusk also landed and released a beautiful 18-1/2” bass. There was never any doubt in my mind that the big bass of the week would eventually be caught by superstar Braden Lowes, he released a monster 19” bass to proudly take top honors for the week. Walleye fishing was decent for our guests using live bait such as minnows and worms but our guests casting crank baits or tube jigs had a tough week. New to camp this week was Bryce Bruns, he started things off by catching a 21” walleye. The Bruns family always catches decent walleyes and most of the credit should go to Tim Bruns—–not. Greg Coy showed his skill to everyone in camp when he released a 25-1/2” walleye. Hayden Lusk was also new to camp this week, he came all the way from Texas to catch and release a chunky 27-1/4” walleye. The biggest walleye of the week was caught by Dennis Earney, he was casting a Sandcat lure when he latched onto a trophy 28” walleye, great job Dennis. Northern fishing continues to pick up steam. The bigger fish are moving into the emerging weeds now and are getting more aggressive. Some of the best baits were Sandcats, Suicks, crank baits, spoons, and large tube baits. Charlie Zender always heads to Keynote to catch northern but his best this week was a pitiful 27”, Keith Hendrix released a 28” northern, Dan Howard did his best to keep his son Bob off the leader board and his 31-1/2” was holding steady until Bob crushed his dad with a chunky 35” northern he released after a few quick pictures, his fish was the big winner for the week and earned Bob the free hat, see you next season Bob. Trout fishing is always an adventure her at Wabaskang but Hayden Lusk managed to drag a beautiful 27” trout from Aerobus Bay fishing down almost 45’, Hayden had the only trout caught this week and he proudly won a hat and bragging rights in his group, Zayden Inselman is always impressing us with his fishing skills and his big dream of catching a red-horse sucker came true this week when grandpa Charlie and Zayden managed to catch and release a beautiful 20-1/2” sucker, he proudly wore his free hat and also was wearing a smile from ear to ear. Next week looks interesting with a group of seasoned anglers arriving in camp right in the middle of a huge may fly hatch, let’s see how the “professionals” fare during these tough conditions. Time to get some sleep but I promise to give everyone another update tomorrow on week seven highlights, for now this is Jim from Wabaskang.
