Week 5 of 2017 June 17th – June 23rd

Another great week here at Jim and Julie’s Wabaskang Camp. Our walleye fishing has slowed some from previous weeks mainly from the erratic weather patterns and an abundance of mayflies. The best bait still seems to be a jig and minnow or crawler combination, crank baits and tube jigs did not produce well this week for most of our guests. A very slow presentation in shallow water caught walleye mornings and evenings with consistency but the bite during the middle of the day was very tough. Holmes Teegarden jumped into the early lead with a chunky 19” walleye he caught using a clown colored stick bait, Randy Narbatovics landed a nice 201/2” walleye only to see Larry “the fishing fanatic” Brabazon jump into first place with his chunky 20-3/4” walleye. Monty Green made the board with his 23” trophy, but Ron “Mr. Forgetful” Peterson slapped his name on the leader board with a beautiful 25” walleye he released—- small for Ron’s standards. Ann Peterson always beats Ron and as usual this week her 26” beauty she released was holding strong until Les Jones toppled her trophy with a 261/2’ beauty he released as well. The super star in camp this week was Glenn Grooters, he landed and released a 271/2” trophy to take home the free hat for the week, great job Glenn now maybe next season you will remember to take your phone charger home with you, we will save it for Ron and Ann next month, didn’t you say “famous last words” when your brother-in-law Ron said he tripled check the cabin to make sure nothing was left behind! Bass fishing was good this week as well, most of the bass have moved into their traditional areas on the lake like rocky shorelines and reedy points. The best bait was a tube jig in an orange and brown color or a Rapala floated above the rocky boulders. Mornings and evenings were the best time to hunt for the critters. Our guests also caught bass on worms and minnows as well. Josh Hardin edged his brother Luke’s 18” bass with a chunky 181/2” bass of his own, Josh took home the free hat for his releasd trophy but we also awarded Brett “never stops talking” Ulrich a hat for his 19” beauty he landed and released. The northern fishing was tough this week for the big brutes, most northern are still scattered along the sparse weed growth and hard to find, we are seeing good weed growth in the last few days so northern fishing should really take off soon. The biggest northern caught this week was landed and released by Sam Ulrich, he released a 35” trophy to win the free hat and have bragging rights in his family for at least one season, next year Brett will show you how it’s done Sam. Next week looks like cooler wet weather but July is just around the corner so Summer should finally show up soon. Next week should see bigger northern and hopefully maybe some real giant walleye to talk about, talk again soon, this is Jim from Wabaskang.
