Greetings from Jim and Julies Wabaskang Camp. Week 9 of the 2019 season was a week of crazy weather and average fishing. The lake continues to slowly rise after another week of heavy rain and strong winds. We are seeing strong storms almost every other day and some uncomfortable heat and humidity as well. The walleye bite was slow early in the week but definitely picked up towards the end of the week. The bite seems to be the best early in the mornings along weed lines and later in the evenings in thick cabbage weeds. Rock piles are producing the occasional lunker as well. Jig and minnow, spinner rigs with a minnow or crawler or small to medium sized crank baits all seem to be catching fish. Mike Pease is a regular here at camp and he had a short stay this week but made the most of it, he released a chunky 25 3/4” walleye and a beautiful 27” walleye on day one to take an early lead on the leader board. Jenn Mericle did her best to represent the ladies in camp and her 25 1/2” walleye she released made her husband Jon very envious, Cody Howard may be young but his 20” walleye was tops in his family. Old Timer Craig Mericle always manages to catch some big fish and his 27 3/4” walleye he released was tops in camp for the week, he seems to enjoy crushing the hopes and dreams of the rest of his family. Our northern fishing was decent this week with plenty of nice eater fish and a few trophies being caught as well. Spoons, crank baits, tube jigs, and stick baits all caught fish. Once again Jenn Mericle jumped into the spot light when she skillfully landed and released a nice 33” northern, once again her husband watches in envy and awe. Mike Pease released a beautiful 33 1/4” northern but the big northern of the eek was caught and released by Rebecca Vanderploeg, she released a beautiful 36” fish to take top honors in camp for the week. The bass fishing is second to none here on Wabaskang and our guests have been enjoying the incredible action all season long. This week’s biggest bass was caught by Todd Woods, he released a chunky 18” brute that was best in camp for the week. We usually don’t talk much about the perch fishing here on Wabaskang but we do have some very good catches made every week, this week Kim Prohaska caught a whopper that measured 11 7/8” long, the biggest of the season so far. We are still issuing licenses here at camp but you can also print them from home or stop at Dutchies General Store or Rainbow Point Camp, both stores are only a mile or so up the road and they can fix you up asap and also have a great selection of groceries, bait and tackle and gift items on hand. The Whiskey Jack Restaurant is serving breakfast now Friday, Saturday, and Sunday so stop in and tell Laura and Graham Hello from us, their restaurant is less than a stone’s throw north of my driveway, they also have a great menu of sandwiches, appetizers, and pizza for your enjoyment. There is road construction taking place on Hwy 502 so if you want a smoother road take the western route through Sioux Narrows.
