Another week has passed us by here at Jim and Julie’s Wabaskang Camp. Week 15 of the season was definitely a week of strong winds and plenty of rain. Our guests managed to catch plenty of fish to eat and had fish to take home but the fishing was a challenge almost every day. The northern bite was decent if you could find a place to fish that was not being pounded by huge waves. It seems that large stick baits and Bulldog style baits are working well along with Suicks, Sandcats, and Reef Hogs. The northern that were caught on the large baits were roaming the deep weed edges in about 12’ to 15’ of water. We also had some big brutes caught in 20’ plus water on a traditional jig and minnow or Lindy Rig. Brian Boevers and Jeff Bruncheon both released 34” northern, Barney Wiersma released a chunky 35” northern, Jim Peters caught and released a 38” northern, Kristy Lammers caught some nice fish this week, her two biggest were 38” and 39”, both fish were released. Once again “Big Mike” Lammers takes top spot for the week, he released a chunky 40” northern, good for a hat but kind of small for my standards. Walleye fishing had good days and bad, once again the wind made fishing tough and some days almost impossible, the best bait was by far live bait, a jig and minnow or Lindy Rig were the top two baits of choice, a spinner rig and night crawler also worked especially in shallower water. Kristy Lammers started things off when she released a 24” walleye, Rich Luhring left camp on Thursday thinking his 25 1/2” walleye he released was going to be the winner but along came Wade Larson who release a 25 3/4” walleye on Friday, too bad so sad Rich. Very few bass caught this week with Kristy Lammers easily cleaning up on the competition, she released a chunky 19” bass to take home bragging rights, I bet she let “Big Mike” here about it all the way home. Sounds like HWY 502 to Dryden is still a bit rough in spots so the route through Nester Falls is a good second option. Remember to give us time to get your cabins ready on Saturday morning so if you’re running a bit early stop in at the Whiskey Jack Restaurant for breakfast or lunch, afterward run up to Dutchies General Store or Rainbow Point store and grab your fishing license if you need one. Next week looks wet and cool but after all it is September, for now this is Jim from Wabaskang.
