Hello again from Jim and Julies Wabaskang Camp. Week number two of the 2018 season is in the books. The week started off hot and humid and ended cold and wet. Our walleye fishing has been good since opening week and continues to impress. Our guests continue to fish shallow water with an ultra slow presentation of a jig and minnow or a tube jig. The fish are still somewhat confused about this quick warm-up then rapid cool-down so a reliable feeding pattern has been hard to determine, the fish are feeding best early mornings and late evenings but we are beginning to see a all-day bite developing. The biggest walleyes this week wee caught by Vi Medhurst, she released a 27 1/2’’walleye, Mark Kleinschmidt landed a 28’’ fish, and Chris Tucker released a prehistoric 30’’ walleye that is still swimming the waters of Keynote lake. Northern fishing is picking up now but it seems the really big fish are still less aggressive than the smaller fish.Logan Kleinschmidt released a 30’’ fish, Carl Timpe released a 33’’ fish and Rob Schluga released the biggest northern of the week, a chunky 34’’ fish. Bass fishing was great again this week, the bass are locking down on their beds now and will attack anything that come near them. Tube jigs are the ticket with green being the best color. Brandon Heuer, a possible future son-in-law, is slowly catching on to bass fishing and he released two fish over 18’’ this week, give him about five more years and he may be out-fishing my brother Big Mike! Kevin Johnson has been teaching/babysitting Brandon for me this week and we really appreciate everything he is doing to keep Brandon on the fish. Kevin loves fishing and is hands-down the best bass fisherman we have in camp each season. Tyler Carrillo was the champ this week for the biggest bass released, his 19 1/2’’ brute was a real thrill to catch and release. Crappie fishing continues impress our guests, tiny jigs or bobbers and a minnow are the best tricks to use. We had a three-way tie for first place this week with Rick Pease, Doug McCord, and Gene Katzung all catching 14’’ crappies. Next week looks wet and cool so the fishing should be good. the water level in the lake is slowly rising and our guests are not having any problems with low water. I am really impressed the way most of our guests are releasing almost all the walleyes over 18’’, it seems “catch and release” is really catching on. That’s all for now, another week and “Big Mike” waddles into camp so there will be plenty to talk about, that’s all for now, this is Jim from Wabaskang.
