Well another week has passed us by here at Jim and Julies Wabaskang Camp. Week three of the season saw good numbers of walleye being caught and also solid bass and crappie numbers. The walleye bite continues to be very good in the morning hours and the evening hours but our guests caught fish throughout the day as well. the best technique seemed to be a simple slip sinker and hook rig slowly pulled along the bottom in 9’ to 13’of water. Another sure-fire technique was to pitch a jig tipped with a minnow or piece of gulp. White and silver were the two main colors but blue and green also worked. Ron Phippen started things off with a chunky 23” walleye, Larry Dufel managed to score a board spot with his 25 1/8” walleye that he released, Wayne Eben made his first visit to camp a memorable one, he landed a 28” walleye which was his personal best, Jim Medhest did manage to catch and release a 27” walleye, not bad for a fella his age. The biggest walleye of the week was expertly caught by Randy Cook, he released a gigantic 28 3/4” walleye which kept his wife Michelle quiet the rest of the week, see you in September. Our bass fishing was very good on week three, big females were setting up shop on their spawning beds and were eager to slam anything that came close. A jig or tiny crank bait worked well with almost any color catching fish. The biggest fish were caught by the dynamic duo Brandon Heuer and Kevin Johnson. Kevin took little Brandon under his arm for two weeks and taught him all there is to know about bass fishing. Seems Brandon is a quick study since he almost beat Kevin when he released an 18 1/2” beauty, Kevin simply went back to his favorite spot a pulled a 19 1/4” out of the water, after he released his fish he came back to camp and loaded his boat to go home, he said his fingers were so sore from catching 50 bass that morning, I guess little Brandon Heuer still has a lot to learn. Northern fishing hasn’t been as good as we had hoped it would be by now but our guests still caught plenty of small and medium sized fish. A red and white spoon worked well this week along with tube jigs and medium sized crank baits. Many of our guests caught northern while fishing for walleyes with light tackle which made for some great action. Wayne Eben once again caught the biggest northern of his life when he hooked and released a 34 1/2” fish. As much as I hate to admit it Pete Sauer does catch a few big fish when he is in camp. This week he actually caught a 41 1/2” monster while walleye fishing near Birch Island, he actually had pictures of his trophy fish unlike other years when mysteriously the pictures never worked out, anyhow he did win a free hat for his efforts which is more than he can say most years. Crappie fishing in Keynote continues to be amazing, most fish are being caught on a tiny jig and minnow or a slip bobber and minnow combo, Larry Dufel caught a 13 1/2” crappie but who cares, other great crappie catches were Tristen Kolb, a 13 5/8” crappie, and the biggest crappie was caught by Steve Sauer, (no relation to Pete) his 15” beauty won him a free hat and proves the boys can still catch big fish even if Jack isn’t along on the trip. Next week looks like warm dry weather so the weeds should be growing fast and will be a big factor in next week’s fishing, for now this is Jim from Wabaskang.
