Finally, an update on fishing here on Wabaskang Lake. Week five of the season saw a mayfly hatch which slowed down our walleye bite somewhat. Our guests still caught fish but numbers were down from previous weeks. The best bite was early morning and late evening when the heat of the day wasn’t pushing the fish down under the cabbage weeds or into deeper water. A simple jig and minnow or twister tail caught walleyes along with a worm harness or small crank bait. The fish are hanging around 10’ to 14’ near weeds or rocks. Ann Peterson as usual out-fished her husband Ron, she caught plenty of decent walleyes with her biggest being a whopping 26”, Rick Nielsen released a chunky 25” walleye, Monty Green always makes an appearance on the leader board and his 26” walleye he released was good for second place this week. Dan Howard uses a special lure he makes with his son Bob; the lures must work because he managed to catch a nice 25 1/2” walleye. The biggest walleye of the week goes to Brian Frantl, he landed a 27 1/4” walleye to win top honors for the week, congratulation Brian it took you long enough to finally win a hat! The northern bite has been getting better and better each week as the weeds begin to thicken and offer plenty of ambush spots for the big brutes to hang out. Most of our guest weren’t throwing big baits for northern so as luck would have it the biggest fish of the week was caught while fishing for walleyes, rookie in camp Austin Weber can hold his head up high knowing his 38” northern which was released was the best in camp on week five, not sure it was skill or just dumb luck but either way he proudly wore his prize hat with a big smile on his face. The bass fishing keeps everybody excited, the big brutes are finishing up their spawning duties and are beginning to look for a tasty meal after the rigors of the spawning period. The best bait was a tube jig tossed right up into shore and worked back to the boat with a jerk and fall action. A minnow type lure was also hot in a clown or gold color. H. Teegarden released a chunky 18” bass but too bad so sad because his fishing partner Sam Ulrich caught and released a gigantic 19 1/2” brute, great job Sam considering you couldn’t even stand up straight with your sore back after the long ride up here from Missouri. Crappie fishing kept many of our guests entertained when thee walleye bite was slow, the best spot was Keynote lake and the best bait was a tiny minnow and jig combo or a bobber and Minnow setup, Les Jones brought in a 12” crappie but who cares, Michael Jones and Randy Narbotovics each caught 14” crappies but Michael wins the hat because he is the “main man” and always will be! Ron Peterson did manage to come up with a gimmick fish to claim a free hat, he caught a 14” perch which kept his spirits up for his next trip in a few weeks, oh and by the way I believe you left your extension cord down at my dock so your streak of forgetting things here at camp is still alive and well. Next week looks like plenty of heat and humidity so we will have to see if the fish more to deeper water and how our guest adapt to the new challenge, for now this is Jim from Wabaskang.
