Week number six of our 2018 season is in the books and we saw plenty of big fish and hot weather. The northern bite has really taken off now with plenty of slot fish being caught and released. The weeds are lush and green now and make a perfect spot for the bigger fish to hide and wait for an unsuspecting bait to swim by. The best bait were Mepps Cyclops in a perch or gold color and of course the old standby a Sandcat in clown or sucker color. Plenty of monster fish released this week, Jeff Jutting had plenty of big brutes, his top two were 37” and 38”, Ryan Inselman released a 33” fish, Charlie Zender released a 29” northern which he eventually was able to up to a 30” later in the week, not the biggest fish he has caught but probably some of the most fun for him this week since he had three of his grandkids in camp to witness the master at work. Greg Coy released a chunky 33” northern, best in his group of eleven anglers, Rick Zender released a beautiful 40-1/4” northern while speed trolling down in Keynote lake which he thought was going to be good for the prize hat but hold on there “potato” man, (he is from Idaho), Kellie Schall released a monster 41” northern while casting a Sandcat in the weeds on the big lake, she takes home the hardware and also bragging rights over all the fellas in camp this week. Bodie Inselman was in camp for the first time in his seven young years and his 27” northern which he held and released all by himself was the big winner in the young angler’s category, great job Bodie. The walleye bite was slow this week with a mayfly hatch and lots of heat keeping the best bite to very early in the morning and after sunset in the evening. Our guest did manage to catch plenty of eater walleyes but they worked hard for their quarry. Brent Minett and Andy Lows both released 24” walleyes, Greg Coy released a 25 3/4” walleye which would have been a hat winner if Nick Katsaropoulos hadn’t come along caught a gigantic 30” walleye while trolling a crankbait not far from our dock, great job Nick. Bass fishing was super this week with plenty of action all day. We had many guests tossing crankbaits and twister trails to the big brutes and also had many of our guest using a simple bobber and worm rig to pull in the big brutes. Little Bodie Inselman released three 18” bass, his grandpa Charlie only had to pay for 8 dozen worms for him to do it, Bodies older brother Zayden released a 19” bass that was the biggest bass of the week and was good for a free hat, not really free if you consider worms were $4 a dozen but Charlie didn’t seem to mind one bit. Ryan Inselman the boy’s dad also released a nice 18 1/2” bass, he sure has taught his sons well when it comes to fishing. Nick Katsaropoulos also released a beautiful 19” bass, he caught his fish after Zayden had already reported his 19” bass to me so the hat went to Zayden but still was Nicks biggest bass ever here. Trout fishing is not real popular here on Wabaskang but we do have a nice population of big trout. The fish are down to about 30’ now in 60’ of water. A blue or silver spoon was a great choice for lures and Aerobus bay was the best place to try. Dennis Earney and Dave Wentlandt combined to bring a 28” trout to the boat but Dennis’s daughter Ashlyn was the big winner this week in camp when she landed a 28 3/4” trout, great job Ashlyn. Next week looks like cooler weather with wet periods so good fishing should be had by all. Talk again soon, this is Jim from Wabaskang.
