Week 7, 2018 June 30th – July 6th

Greetings to all from Jim and Julie’s Wabaskang Camp. Week 7 of our season was full of hot weather and even hotter fishing. The walleye fishing was very good for both eaters and trophy fish. The best lure or bait to use was a spinner rig and minnow, orange and chartreuse were by far the best color combination and 10’ to 15’ was the best depth to fish in. Tom Ward released a chunky 22 1/4” walleye, Jeannette Snyder released a 23” walleye only to see hubby Kevin crush her with his 24” walleye he also released. Mike Lammers was back in camp this week, he was sooooo excited about his 27” walleye he released that I actually wanted to be excited for him as well but by the end of the week his “miracle” fish ended up no better than fifth place—too bad sooooo sad. Donn Cummings released a chunky 27 1/2” walleye beating his boat buddy Tim Wuethrich for the week which isn’t easy to do. Cecilia Christensen did her best to represent the ladies in camp, she released a 27 3/4” walleye she caught trolling deep water with a crank bait after dark one night. Reid Lammers takes after his uncle Jim in more ways than one, not only is he a lineman like me but he out-fished his dad “Big Mike” just like I always did, Reid released a chunky 28” walleye while tossing jigs and minnows on a rocky reef in Mcloud Bay, face it Mike your glory days are over before they even started. The big winner of the week was Tim “Mr. Walleye” Bruns, he released a gigantic 30 1/4” walleye which is the biggest of the season so far here in camp, great job Tim, maybe you can teach “Big Mike” a few of your tricks. Northern fishing turned on this week with the best group of trophy fish being released so far this season. The big brutes were roaming the good green cabbage weeds and were hitting large stick baits and tube baits. Sand Cats, Suicks, and Bulldogs all produced good fish. Mike Lammers once again had one of the smallest “trophy” northern on the board this week, he released a 36” northern that ended up no better than fifth for the week, once again I say–too bad so sad, Joyce Adams released her personal best northern this week, she released a legitimate 36” northern that husband Randy can only dream of ever catching, maybe my brother Mike and Randy should consider a new hobby that doesn’t require so much skill like lawn darts or hop scotch. Reid Lammers continues to make me proud, he released a chunky 41” northern and was very excited until “Camp Legend” Marty Neihouser came along and released a 42 1/2” northern, and while were chatting Marty you haven’t called me back about that second trip to camp we talked about, maybe your wife Angie had something to say about it when you got home. The biggest northern of the week was caught and released by Evan Neihouser, his 43” monster is the biggest of the season so far, great job Evan. Tim “Super Star” Wuethrich was the only fella to release a musky this week, he released a 38” brute that kept his status as the man to beat intact, see you in August Tim. Lots of giant bass caught and released this week, most fish were caught on crank baits or twister tails. Jeremy Bowers started things off when he released an 18” bass, Tim Wuethrich caught so many bass his clicker counter was wearing out, but his best fish of the week was only 18 1/4”, a small bass in Tim’s eyes. Evan Neihouser and Reid Lammers each released 19 1/4” bass, Evan reported his bass to me first, so he is declared the winner of the free trophy hat, Reid is still a winner in fiancé Kenzie’s eyes though! Perch fishing was spotty this week with worms and small jigs with a twister tail being the bait and lure of choice. Henry Christensen caught a 11 1/2” perch only to see Owen Goodchild slam the door in his face with a gigantic 12” perch, great job Owen, wear your hat with pride. Next week looks hot with a chance of storms about mid-week. The fishing is heating up so let’s chat again soon, this is Jim from Wabaskang.
