Greetings from Jim and Julies Wabaskang Camp. Week 13 of our 2019 season is in the books and we have plenty to talk about. Our walleye fishing was very good again this week with plenty of trophy sized fish being caught and released. The bigger fish have started moving to deeper water now and can be caught using a Lindy Rig or jig and minnow combination. The best depth for the big brutes seems to be between 21’ and 28’, the eater sized fish can still be caught in shallower water right along the weed lines using crank baits, twister tails, or spinner rigs with a minnow or crawler. Veneta Bruns started things off this week when she landed and released a chunky 24” walleye, Sue Cabelinski released a 24 1/2” walleye, Rhett “Rat Hair” Lammers only managed to catch and release a 24 1/2” walleye, he was stuck fishing with “Big Mike” all week so I’m not surprised. Beau Thompson did get a bigger walleye than Rhett, he released a 25” fish, Brianna Luecke always out-fishes her husband Paul and her 27” walleye she released was only beat by camp legend Tim Wuethrich, he was top walleye angler again this week, he released a beautiful 28” fish. Our northern fishing was a bit slow last week but we did see plenty of slot fish being released. The best bait seemed to be any big musky type lure in a hard or soft bodied version, we also had some trophy fish being caught while our guests were walleye fishing in deep water with a jig and minnow or Lindy Rig and minnow. Beau Thompson, Logan Wuethrich, and Evan Neihouser all released 36” fish, Brianna Luecke released a beautiful 37” northern, Karen Orr released a beautiful 37 3/4” northern, Rhett “Rat Hair” Lammers released a 38” northern, Tim Wuethrich’s best this week was a measly 39” northern he released. The biggest northern of the week was caught and released by “Big Mike Lammers, his 40” fish finally gets him back into the conversation about who is top “Dog” on the lake, let’s wait and see how he does on his next trip before we get too carried away. Our bass fishing was slower this week as well for our guests, usually we see some of our guests catching and releasing dozens of bass a day but this week the bass seem to be transitioning from shallow water rocks and weeds to deep water bars and rock humps. Marty Neihouser and Bob Luecke both released 18” bass this week but nothing bigger, better luck next year fellas. We did have a few nice perch caught this week; Ryan Neihouser claimed top honors this week when he caught a chunky 11 1/2” perch. Next week we have a camp of experienced fishing veterans returning so we should see some great results. Remember you can grab your fishing license before you get to camp if you have a chance, you can get them on line or stop in at Dutchies General store or Rainbow Point store, both only a few miles up the road from my driveway.
