Yes, this is Jim from Wabaskang again, week four of the 2018 season was full of big fish, not just big walleyes but the gigantic northern seem to be turning on now. The weather was once again warmer and dryer than normal although we did see almost 3/4” of rain on the evening/early morning hours of the 14th of June. water levels on the lake are low but not bad compared to other dry years. The crappie fishing has finally slowed for our guests, we saw a few decent fish caught this week but nothing like the first three weeks of the season, seems the fish have finished spawning now and are a bit more scattered and harder to find. The biggest crappie of the week went to one of the hardest and most dedicated fishermen we have in camp, Lance Petrasek landed a 14” crappie that easily beat the rest of the camp, great job Lance. Bass fishing was super again this week with many giant females being caught and released. Some of our guests caught bass throwing crank baits and some of our guests caught bass pitching jigs, either technique produced monster bass and plenty of action. Gary Liese started things off when he caught a nice 18 1/2” bass, Marty Bramer also released a chunky 18 1/2” bass to my surprise since he was fishing with my brother “Big Mike” and everybody knows Mike doesn’t have a clue where to bass fish. Trenton Thiel is always keeping me updated on his groups big fish but he actually caught a 19” brute which was easily the biggest for him ever, great job Trenton. Chandler Seehusen released 2 – 19” bass this week, he had the free hat in his grasp until fun-hater dad Clint crushed his dreams with a 19 1/2” bass, nothing like a little friendly family competition, wish I had some. Northern fishing was great for my guests who were throwing big stick baits. The weeds are beginning to push to the surface and the big brutes are moving in and setting up shop. Craig Codner has a strange way of measuring his fish, he said the fish was easily 39” except it was missing part of its tail so the actual measurement was a measly 36”, not sure how he figured out 3” of tail was missing but he is known to exaggerate length measurements on more than just fish. Marty Bramer struggled with “Big Mike” and his best was only 36”, some expert Mike is. Jordon Hansen released a pair of 39” brutes, he was also fishing with my brother Mike and mentioned Mike was a little pouty when he saw someone else catching the big fish. “Big Mike” did catch a few good northern, mostly because he has a way of positioning the boat so no one else can cast to the best spots, anyway his biggest was a measly 40 1/4” fish that was clobbered by fishing camp hero Cade Williams, he landed a monster 40 1/2” fish to take home the free hat for the week, Cade is still in high school and hasn’t spent a fortune on boats, motors, and lures like “Big Mike” but Cade is wearing the free hat tonight not Mike, hmmmm maybe Mike should go back to school for a little refresher course or break out the old videos of me fishing and take a few notes on how it is done. By the way all of the northern over the slot caught this week by our guests were released to fight another day. Walleye fishing was average this week with plenty of eater fish and a pair of 28” monsters to top the leader board, Dale Wilson kept the tradition alive in his family by once again keeping his wife Carolyn off the big fish board, next year will be your year Carolyn. Dales 28” walleye was released after a few quick pictures as was Greg’s Stankewicz’s 28” beauty, both fish are swimming around out there today rethinking a few of the poor choices they made a few days ago. Next week we have a camp almost half full with anglers from Missouri so we will see plenty of action for bass and northern from those fellas. Remember catch and released of the trophy fish is the best way to keep the fishing as good as it can be. Remember to check Dutchie’s General store out on your way to camp this season, she has everything you need or might need and is just five minutes up the road, also check out the Whiskey Jack Restaurant for a wonderful home-made pizza or sandwich, a meal out during your stay here is always a welcome change. We are now also offering sight-seeing flights to our guests to those of you that are curious to see the area from the air, Clarks Northern Lights will Land right at our dock and give you a wonderful experience of a lifetime, we can make all the arrangements for you when you get to camp if you decide to give it a try. Well that’s about all for now, this is Jim from Wabaskang.
